Day 5

Mt Carmel, Haifa and Tiberias

sunny 33 °C

Today started with a taxi ride to the airport with Speedy Gonzales. We went at some speed, taking only 20 minutes to get to the airport. Yesterday, the same ride took 45 minutes!

It would be remiss of me not to mention that Hello Kitty is everywhere in Israel. Who would have thought?!

People watching has always been an enjoyable past time of mine and this morning I spent a few hours waiting at Tel Aviv airport for my tour group to arrive. A long black and gluten-free marble cake kept me going.

A few pet dogs came to welcome their weary travellers home. Not sure you would get away with that at Tullamarine...

With everybody on board the bus, we headed to Mt Carmel. This is the place where Elijah proved God with the prophets of Baal. Quite surreal to be standing there and looking across over the Armageddon valley. One of Petra’s songs was running through my mind as I looked across the valley and could hear jets flying over.

After a scripture reading, recounting Elijah’s interaction with the prophets we had a time of devotion and sang Spirit of the living God - the first time in the garden and the second time in the Chapel at the Carmelite Monastery. The acoustics were amazing and I could have sat and listened to my fellow pilgrims all day. The words of the song capture the essence of this pilgrimage for me. ‘Spirit of the living God, fall a fresh on me. Melt me, mould me, fill me, use me.’

Back on the bus, we headed to Haifa and visited the Baha’i Gardens. Absolutely stunning with The Mediterranean Sea as the back drop.

It takes only 1 1/2 hours to drive from one side of Israel to the other, as we discovered today.

Our last stop for the day, our hotel on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Again, it is so surreal being here. Looking out of my hotel window, the words of Jesus come to mind...’Peace, be still.’ What a reminder.

O can only imagine that the just being in that place would breathe new life into the prophetic words and the scriptural story. My prayer for you is that the entire scene be vividly etched on your mind and heart.
